Graphic design students recognized with 29 Graphis awards, honorable mentions
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Twenty-nine designs by Stuckeman School graphic design students were recognized at the 2022 Graphis New Talent Annual Awards competition.
The Graphis New Talent Awards honor awardees at the platinum, gold and silver levels, in addition to honorable mentions, which are selected by a jury of industry experts. Design categories include beauty and fashion advertising, book and publication design, branding, exhibits, film/video, illustration, infographics, interaction design, logos, packaging, restaurant concept design, photography, posters and more.
Twenty submissions by Penn State graphic design students earned awards and another nine received honorable mentions.
Fourth-year student Connor Schwenk earned four awards in this year’s competition. His submission titled “Space Oddity Magazine Spread,” which he created in third-year studio taught by Assistant Teaching Professor of Graphic Design Taylor Shipton, received a platinum award in the design editorial category. “Cinamobile” and “Lost in Translation Title Sequence,” which Schwenk created in third-year studio taught by Associate Professor of Graphic Design Ryan Russell, were both issued gold awards in the film/video category. His fourth design, “Kossman Archives,” with Russell earned a silver award in the film/video and interactive design categories.
Taylor Kuszyk, a third-year student, earned a gold award in the poster category for her “Beach Boys Concert Poster” that she designed in second-year studio with Assistant Professor of Graphic Design Emily Burns. She also earned silver award with Shipton for “Trapped in Wonderland” in the digital photography category.
Fourth-year students Becca Baker and Cameron Soravilla earned gold awards for their submissions: Baker, with Shipton, for her “deVil Magazine Spread” in the design editorial category and Soravilla, with Russell, for “Midsommar Title Sequence” in the film/video category.
Fourth year students Jacob Lawall, Scotti Everhart and Alex Rupp received silver awards for their work: Lawall with Shipton for his “Flourish” series in the book design category, Everhart for her “Too Faced Social Media Campaign” with Shipton in the advertising and beauty and fashion categories, and Rupp with Russell for “It’s a Sin” in the film/video category.
Third-year student Emma Swayze received a silver award in the poster category for the “Mental Health Awareness Poster” that she designed in second-year studio with Burns.
Abby Blend, Cassie Luzenski, Tamar Najarian, Zane Sommese and Megan Tam, who are spring 2021 graphic design graduates, received silver awards for their work : Blend with Burns for “Figment” in the design branding category, Luzenski with Burns for “Grooves” in the design branding category, Najarian with Burns for “The Zodiac Collection” in the design branding category, Sommese with Russell for “La Jetée” in the film/video category, and Tam with Burns for “Castores Beauty” in the design branding category.
Shatakshi Mehra, who is pursuing a master of fine arts degree with a concentration in graphic design, earned a silver award for her submission with Russell titled “Delhi Metro Redesign” in the advertising and healthcare categories.
Anjana Padmakumar, who graduated with a master of fine arts degree with a concentration in graphic design in 2021, earned two silver awards: one for her “Stay Sane Covid Kit” design with Russell in the design branding category and the other for a “Beeism” infographic that she created with Huiwon Lim, assistant professor of graphic design, in the design infographic category.
Those projects receiving honorable mentions include:
- “A Blooming Story” by Mehra and Lim in the motion graphics category.
- “Bloom” by Padmakumar and Russell in the advertising healthcare category.
- “Dezignfest” by Taylor Mazzarella, a 2021 graphic design alumna, and Burns in the design branding category.
- “Features” by Michaela Lucas, a 2021 graphic design alumna, and Burns in the design branding category.
- “Good Plants” by Blake Thresher, who graduated in 2021 with a master of fine arts in art with a concentration on graphic design, and Lim in the infographics category.
- “Goud” by Rebecca Larson and Shipton in the design packaging category.
- “PCH” by Clare Connell and Burns in the design vinyl category.
- “Skincare Social Media Campaign” by Soravilla and Shipton, in the advertising and beauty and fashion categories.
- “The Crescendo” by Kristen Campion, Phoenix Chan, Soravilla and Russell in the design branding category.
